Burglary Prevention

This checklist is provided as a guide to help you identify features in your home or the daily habits/routines of your family which might make your home a target for a burglar.

Doors:
Are outside doors in the house of metal or solid wood construction?
Are doorframes strong and tight enough to prevent forcing or spreading?
Are door hinges safe from removal from outside?
Are there windows in any door or within 40 inches of the locks?
Are all door locks in good repair?
Can the locking mechanism be reached through a mail slot?
Do screen or storm doors have adequate locks?
Are all entrances lit with at least a 40 watt bulb?
Can the front entrance be observed from the street or public areas?
Do porches or shrubbery offer concealment from view from the street?
Are sliding glass doors secured from being lifted out of their track?

Windows:
Do all windows have adequate locks in operating condition?
Do windows have screens or storm windows that lock from inside?
Is the exterior adequately lit at all window areas?
Are trees and shrubbery kept trimmed back from upper floor windows?

Basement Doors and Windows:
Is there a door from outside to the basement?
If so is that door adequately secure?
Does an exterior light light the outside basement entrance?
Is the outside basement door concealed from the street or neighbours?
Are all basement windows adequately secured against entry?

Garage Doors and Windows:
Are vehicle entrance doors equipped with adequate locking devices?
Are all other garage doors kept closed and locked at all times?
Are all garage windows secured adequately for ground floor windows?
Are tools and ladders kept in the garage and not stored outside?
Are all garage doors lit by at least a 40 watt bulb?
