Anybody can fall victim to fraud but it is often directed at senior citizens because criminals take advantage of circumstances that make older adults vulnerable. Their financial situations, special heath needs, reliance on others to do work around the home, or limited access to transportation make seniors the potential targets of con artists.
How to Identify a Con Artist
There are no telltale signs to look for: the con artist will usually look like an average person and will show no signs of criminal behavior. A criminal can get away with fraud because he or she looks unsuspecting. However, con artists can often be identified by their words:
Whenever you are asked to turn over large amounts of cash, be cautious. Beware of someone talking about "something for nothing" or a "secret inside deal". Ask yourself, "Why am I being asked not to tell anyone?" Be wary of deals available "only today" or that are "last chance". Watch out for persons who try to pressure you into signing something you do not fully understand or are evasive and do not give straight answers. The bottom line is if a situation does not feel right, follow your intuition. You have the right to say "NO" to anything.
