Charlottetown Parks and Recreation Manager Sue Fraser has announced her retirement after more than 20 years with the City.

Fraser was instrumental in the development and implementation of the Parks Master Plan, Victoria Park Master Plan, Integrated Community Sustainability Plan, Regional Active Transportation Plan and in the development of the Simmons Master Plan. She was involved in the Heritage Squares Concept Master Plan, building active transportation routes in Charlottetown, and working with a team to administer a broad range of public recreation programs in the capital region.

She is a true ambassador of healthy, active living and was often first in line to participate in Bike to Work challenges, sustainability workshops and healthy eating initiatives. She also leads an active lifestyle through activities such as hiking, biking and sailing.

"Sue has had a tremendous impact on staff and on our city in her role as Parks and Recreation Manager but also as a citizen who takes great pride in her community and has made a point of getting involved for the betterment of Charlottetown," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "She has helped the department establish a strong foundation on which to build and a clear direction for the future of our parks and recreational programs and activities. We want to thank her for all that she has done."

Charlottetown Chief Administrative Officer Roy Main said Fraser’s absence will be felt at City Hall.

"Sue is a valued member of our administration and will be greatly missed," Main said. "Her professionalism and leadership has helped the Parks and Recreation Department grow into on a responsive and efficient department that consistently offers a high level of service."

Fraser’s career in Charlottetown began in 1986 when she accepted the Recreation Director position with the Sherwood-Parkdale Recreation Committee Inc. After amalgamation in 1995, she took on the role of Parks and Recreation Manager. In 2001, she was seconded to serve as the project manager for Smart Communities Charlottetown, managing 28 different IT projects with nine funding partners.

After returning to her position as Parks and Recreation Manager in 2004, Fraser found time to serve as President of the Hillsborough Rotary Club, member of the 2009 Canada Summer Games organizing committee and ceremonies committee, and volunteer with local and regional rotary organizations. Fraser also has her Masters Certificate in Project Management and Bachelor of Science in Recreation Administration.

"Sue Fraser has been a rock-solid Parks and Recreation Manager," said Councillor Mitchell Tweel, Chairperson of the Parks, Recreation and Leisure Activities Committee. "Her unquestionable commitment, dedication and perseverance was greatly appreciated by myself, members of the previous council, as well as the new council," Tweel said. "I would personally like to wish Sue very best wishes and I know that her professionalism will be prevalent and consistent in the days to come and her productivity will always be at the forefront."
