The City of Charlottetown Water and Sewer Utility Department has provided a grant worth $32,000 to the Winter River-Tracadie Bay Watershed Association.

The grant was provided to the association because the Winter River Watershed is the main source of the City’s water and the association works to enhance the watershed. Last year, a similar grant was provided and used for major habitat enhancement initiatives, including tree planting, educational programs for children, nest boxes for birds, as well as monitoring streams and springs for flow and nitrate levels.

This year, the grant will be put toward awareness campaigns related to buffer zones, water conservation and nitrates. The money will also be used for continued monitoring programs and habitat enhancement.

Councillor Edward Rice, Chair of the City’s Water and Sewer Utility committee, presented the grant to Jean-Paul Arsenault, a member of the association’s Board of Directors; Sarah Wheatley, the Watershed coordinator; and George Coade, Chair of the Winter River-Tracadie Bay Watershed Association.
