2015-06-25 - Canada Day Activities and Traffic Advisory

The City of Charlottetown has something for everyone at its upcoming Canada Day celebrations on Wednesday, July 1. Victoria Park will come alive with music, children’s activities, and fun for the whole family beginning with the Official Ceremonies at 11:30 a.m. and ending with a spectacular fireworks display at 10 p.m.

Family activities in Victoria Park will take place from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. and include: balloon twisting, face painting, bouncy rides, horse and wagon Rides, a petting zoo, and a food vending area. The Victoria Park swimming pool, splashpad and playground will also be available for use.

The 10-hour live outdoor concert will include performances by: Mi’kmaq Legends, Amy and Rachel Back, The Woodpeckers, Teresa Doyle and Patrick Bunston, Yakbak, Copy Cat, Lady Soul, Coyote, Gordon Belsher, Courtney Hogan-Chandler and Todd MacLean, and More Soul.

During the Canada Day activities, there will be some closures that the travelling public should be aware of, including:

• The Victoria Park Roadway vehicle lane and cycling lane will be closed to cyclists and motorists to allow for increased pedestrian traffic and the setup and launch of the fireworks. These lane closures will be in place from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1.
• The Victoria Park Driveway North (AKA Tennis Roadway) will be closed to motorists from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. on July 1.
• A section of the Victoria Park Boardwalk will be closed to pedestrians from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. for the setup, launch and teardown of the fireworks on July 1.

Please note: the sound of fireworks can cause anxiety in pets. Each year, the Canada Day organizing committee has seen dogs run away from owners during the fireworks. It is therefore suggested that pet owners ensure their pets have proper identification and are kept at a safe distance from the fireworks launch area.
In case of inclement weather, the fireworks will be postponed until the following evening (Thursday, July 2) at 10 p.m. The 10-hour concert on July 1 is a rain or shine event. The family activities from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. are weather dependant. In the event of inclement weather, an announcement will be made on the City's Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/CityofCharlottetown and sent to local media.
