2015-07-17 - Communities in Bloom National Judges in Charlottetown July 21-23

The City of Charlottetown will host the Communities in Bloom national judges from July 21-23.

As a previous international winner, the City has entered the Class of Champions category and will be judged on qualities such as tidiness, environmental action, heritage conservation, urban forestry, and floral displays.

"The City of Charlottetown won the national title in 2001 and 2007 and the International Challenge in 2011 with recognition of our Sustainable Actions because of private and public partnerships, volunteer activity and a tremendous amount of work," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "Each year, our citizens get heavily involved. They demonstrate their civic pride and help us promote our green spaces, sustainable initiatives and beautification efforts. Hundreds of Canadian communities are participating in Communities in Bloom, along with municipalities from around the world, and we are proud to have Charlottetown – the Birthplace of Confederation – involved in such a renowned program."

The 2015 judges for the Class of Champions category are Steve Preston and Gaétan Deschênes. Mr. Preston worked for the City of Brampton for 30 years in Parks and Recreation. He has been involved with Communities in Bloom since 2000 and this will be his seventh year as a national judge.  Mr. Deschênes is a horticultural journalist with a 30-year career at Radio-Canada. He is an active member of the beautification committee in his hometown of Saint-Basile-le-Grand, Québec.

The judges will begin their evaluation of Charlottetown on July 22 by visiting Confederation Landing and participating in a Heritage Walking Tour downtown.

"Communities in Bloom is a non-profit organization that’s now celebrating its 21st year," said Councillor Terry Bernard, Chair of the City’s Public Works and Urban Beautification Committee. "For the 20th anniversary last year, we hosted the national Symposium and Awards Ceremonies, which was a great honour. We’re very pleased to continue to be part of the Communities in Bloom program this year, and we thank those who have made it possible for us to be involved."

"Communities in Bloom is honoured to have Charlottetown, the Birthplace of Confederation amongst its participants. We have learned from, and showcased, many initiatives involving the community," said Raymond Carriere, Founding President of Communities in Bloom.

The results of the judging will be announced during the Communities in Bloom Symposium and Awards Ceremonies in Kamloops, British Columbia between Sept. 30 and October 3.
