National Child Day parade held in Charlottetown Fri. Nov. 20
CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI – Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee invites Charlottetown residents to come out for Charlottetown’s Child Day Parade Fri. Nov. 20, 2009.
"Our children are our future, our children are important and valued members of our community they need and deserve our love, care and protection so that can grow to their full potential and be the leaders of our future," Mayor Lee said.
"In addition to today’s parade and activities individuals, communities, governments and businesses must continue to work together to address issues facing young people. We need to promote and develop policies that respect dignity and the integrity of our children."
Nov. 20 marks the 20th anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child with National Child Day. National Child Day commemorates the United Nations’ adoption of two policies protecting children under the age of 18 – the Declaration of Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. These documents mean every child has the right to the three "Ps" Protection from abuse and neglect, provision of basics like food, shelter and clothing and participation by their having opinions heard.
Charlottetown’s Child Day Parade will start on Kent Street in front of the Fire Hall at 10 a.m.
More than 400 kids and caregivers will walk up Kent to University Avenue and end with cookies and milk at Memorial Hall.
"Let’s celebrate all children today, during National Child Day," Lee said.
