The City of Charlottetown recently held a ceremony to show appreciation and thanks for the contribution that the 14 Newcomer Ambassadors have made to the City over the past seven months.

The Newcomer Ambassadors group was created to provide consultation on the Newcomer Civic Engagement initiative that was piloted from July to December. The purpose was for the City of Charlottetown to provide an opportunity for Newcomers to Charlottetown to become connected to City Hall, the Mayor, Council and staff, and to become familiar with City programs, services and policies. The Ambassadors represent eight different countries from around the world, including; Syria, India, China, Vietnam, Taiwan, Egypt, Venezuela, and the Philippines.

"I want to extend my sincere thanks to the group of Newcomer Ambassadors who generously donated many hours of their time and expertise to assist in the planning and execution of the newcomer events," said Mayor Clifford Lee. "Collectively the group has volunteered more than 700 hours, seeing more than 850 newcomers at the City hosted events over the past six months. The Newcomer Ambassadors were able to offer first hand advice and provide a leadership role to those who are new to our great City"

The Ambassadorial team assisted in the planning, execution, evaluation of five newcomer  targeted events including: the launch of the project with the Mayors Newcomer Reception, which saw 400 Newcomers at City Hall, the monthly orientation sessions with meet and greets, information fairs of City's departments and affiliated community partners, like Transit and Island Waste Management Corporation. Each session also included a tour of a City facility, Fire Station 1 or a community partner, Confederation Centre of the Arts.

Feedback from the sessions has been overwhelmingly positive and the City hopes to host annual events for newcomers to Charlottetown. The PEI Association for Newcomers has identified City’s model as a potential guide for other municipalities.
