Charlottetown City Council responds to downtown employees’ parking concerns
CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI – In order to ease the transition to the new rates, Charlottetown City council has voted to stagger the increase in the monthly parking fees over the next two years.
"Since the announcement of the City and its partners’ new parking strategy last week, we have received lots of good feedback on downtown parking," said Councillor Stu MacFadyen.
"However, we have listened to the concerns of downtown employees who said a one-time increase of $30 a month was too much, too soon."
Effective April 1
st
, 2010 the rates for the downtown parkades will be: Pownal Parkade - $60 per month; Fitzroy Parkade - $75 per month and Queen Parkade - $90 per month.
"We sincerely hope this gives everyone, ample time to consider the options that are best for them," said MacFadyen.
Council will delay the balance of the increase for Fitzroy Parkade until April 1, 2011 at which time the monthly parking rate for Fitzroy will match the Queen St. Parkade at $90 per month.
"We will continue to work with all stakeholders to ensure there is a complete range of affordable, available transportation and parking options in our vibrant downtown" MacFadyen said.
