2017-03-10 - Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries

The Charlottetown Fire Department would like to remind the public that on Sunday, March 12, clocks will need to be adjusted to "spring ahead" one hour for the start of Daylight Savings Time.

The Fire Department is encouraging residents to use Daylight Savings Time as a reminder to change the batteries in smoke alarms and update or install new smoke alarms. Batteries should be replaced every six months and there should be a working smoke alarm in every sleeping room on every level of a home.

Smoke alarms are critical for fire safety and can help prevent fire-related injuries or even death. They should be tested once a month and replaced when they are 10 years old.

Members of the Metro Fire Prevention Association will have a booth at the PEI Provincial Home Show taking place March 10 to 12 at the Charlottetown Eastlink Centre. At the booth there will be a fire extinguisher simulator along with important fire safety information.

Members of the Charlottetown and North River Fire Departments will be at McDonalds on University Avenue on Saturday, March 11 from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. handing out batteries for smoke alarms and reiterating these important fire safety messages. Members of the Crossroads Fire Department will also be handing out batteries at the Esso Service Station/McDonalds in Stratford.
