2017-03-21 - Youth Offered Opportunity to Sail on Tall Ships

(For the news release in French, please see the attachment below)

The Rendez-vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta is offering the experience of a lifetime to youth ages 15 to 25.

The event will see a fleet of 40 tall ships sailing Canadian waters to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Canadian Confederation. The ships will visit ports in Québec, Ontario and the Maritimes, including Charlottetown from June 30 until July 2.

As part of the Rendez-vous 2017 Tall Ships Regatta, youth can join the Sail Training International trainee program to sail on one of the ships. It’s expected that about 3,000 trainees will take part.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for youth in the Charlottetown area to gain experience at sea that they might otherwise never have access to," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "Those in the program will take part in all of the tasks of a crew member. It’s great for anyone with an adventurous spirit, a love of travelling and an interest in meeting others from around the world."

Trainee positions are primarily offered to youth ages 15 to 25, but Sail Training International does have a program for applicants 25 years or older. With the exception of the ships of national navies, all the ships accept both novice and experienced sailors. Applicants with reduced mobility can also apply as there is a fully accessible ship taking part.

There is a cost associated with the program but it is dependant on what leg of the race a person is interested in and how long they wish to be on board. Forms to express interest in the program are available online and once filled out, a representative from Sail Training International will contact the applicant within 48 hours to explain the different options based on interests, availability and budget.

Details about the training program are available online at: www.sailonboard.com or through the "Become a Trainee" section of the www.RDV2017.com website (direct URL: http://www.rdv2017.com/en/trainee/ ). Questions can be directed to: trainees@rdv2017.com

Additional information on the Tall Ships visit to Charlottetown will be announced closer to the event. Details on the overall initiative are available at: www.RDV2017.com

Space is limited. Those interested are encouraged to reach out as soon as possible.
