Sea Level Rise & Sustainable Development
The City of Charlottetown, in 2000, participated in a study of Sea Level Rise due to Climate Change (Coastal Impacts of Climate Change and Sea Level Rise on Prince Edward Island – Geological Survey of Canada – Open File 4261) and the findings indicated the City of Charlottetown should prepare for sea level rise. Given the recommendations of the study, the City has required developers building in potential flood areas to raise their buildings above the 4.29m geodetic level of land to prevent possible future flooding as sea level rises. In the past few years there has been a number of buildings that have been built to avoid possible flooding of the main living areas and essential services like heating, sewer and water, electrical, etc.

One possible definition of sustainability is as follows:
Sustainability: An effort to provide the best outcomes for the human and natural environments, both now and into the indefinite future. Sustainability relates to the continuity of economic, social, cultural, and environmental aspects of communities, as well as the non-human environment.
As a community we should always be conscious of sustainability and living on an Island it is even more important how we conduct ourselves on a daily basis and a sustainability literate person should be able to:
Understand the need for change to a sustainable way of doing things, individually and collectively;
Have sufficient knowledge and skills to decide and act in a way that favours sustainable development;
Recognize and reward action by others that favour sustainable development.
