Capital New Year - December 31

The City of Charlottetown will host a New Year's Eve celebration on Great George Street to cap off the events and activities held in the Capital region in 2014.

"We've had an exciting year of special events and programs to commemorate our City's historic role in the founding of our country as 2014 marked the 150th anniversary of the Charlottetown Conference," said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. "This New Year's Eve event is to thank everyone who helped and participated in our year-long celebrations. It allows us to come together as a community to bring to a close what has been an amazing year for our city."

The event, Capital New Year, will include outdoor activities along Great George Street and indoor activities within Murphy's Community Centre. The indoor and outdoor activities start at 6 p.m. and are free to the public.

Great George Street will be transformed into a winter wonderland with Christmas displays, entertainment, horse and wagon rides, and heated seating areas. There will also be hot apple cider, hotdogs, and musical entertainment by popular Island cover band The Love Junkies and the six-piece, old-school soul and funk band More Soul. A video recap of events and activities held in 2014 will play on a large screen throughout the evening.

At Murphy's Community Centre, there will be bouncy rides and inflatables and face painting for children. At approximately 8 p.m., the crowd on Great George Street will be asked to take the historic walk of the Fathers of Confederation to the bottom of Great George Street for a spectacular fireworks display to wrap-up the New Year's Eve celebration.

If the Capital New Year celebration has to be cancelled due to inclement weather, an announcement will be made on local radio stations on December 31.
